In my experience it works best on professionally printed photos on semi-gloss or matte photo paper. I did have to impress several copies to test speed, pressure, etc. I recommend using the standard size tip for best results, and use less pressure than you would for a sheet of bill of fare stock to avoid scratching the photo.
